Week 35 Diet Tip
Limit the use of pet carriers
The use of pet carriers and prams for small dogs is growing in popularity. In their favour, carriers provide a secure way to keep your dog close whilst out of the home environment and can provide a safe option when visiting high traffic areas where there is risk of your dog being stepped on by passers-by.
However it is best to restrict their use. Ideally prams and carriers should be limited to dogs who are disabled or physically unable to go the distance walked.
If using a carrier, remember to let your dog out regularly to stretch their legs, boost their circulation and sniff their surrounds. Depriving your dog of such experiences not only reduced their ability to burn calories but limits opportunity to express natural dog behaviour and to socialise with other dogs.
