Week 23 Diet Tip

Pay Attention to Medication Doses as your Dog Loses Weight

An often unheralded benefit of dog weight loss is a reduction in the dose of many medications.

Most medications and parasite treatments are dosed according to body weight. So as your dog drops weight it is likely they could drop a weight range (or two) in any parasitic treatments they take (i.e. worm, tick and flea treatments). Which is great news for your hip pocket!

When buying over-the-counter medicines, supplements and parasiticides, remember to dose according to your dog’s current weight.

If your dog takes prescription medication, your dog should regularly attend check-ups with your veterinarian. During this check-up your vet will update your dog’s weight record and where necessary adjust the dose of medication. Never adjust prescription dose rates, unless under your vet’s advice.
